I was introduced to William Cowper through John Piper's audio series: Men Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy. It is truly one of his most awe-inspiring works. I highly recommend it!!!

For those of you who don't recognize the name...William Cowper (pronounced Cooper) wrote many hymns and religious poems, collaborating often with John Newton. Some of his other works you may recognize: "Oh, For A Closer Walk With God" and "There Is A Fountain". Today, I'd like to share one of my favorite poems and hymns with you...

The Difference Between Knowledge and Wisdom
William Cowper

Knowledge and wisdom, far from being one,
Have ofttimes no connexion. Knowledge dwells
In heads replete with thoughts of other men;
Wisdom in minds attentive to their own.
Knowledge, a rude unprofitable mass,
The mere materials with which Wisdom builds,
Till smooth’d and squared and fitted to its place,
Does but encumber whom it seems to enrich.
Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much;
Wisdom is humble that he knows no more.

God Moves in Mysterious Ways
William Cowper

God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill,
He treasures up his bright designs,
And works his sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread
are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

I especially like the last two lines in Cowper's poem:

"Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much;
Wisdom is humble that he knows no more."

It reminds me of two proverbs...

In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly. Proverbs 13:16

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. Proverbs 13:20

...and of course, 1 Cor. 8:1, This 'knowledge' puffs ups, but love builds up.

Thanks for sharing and being reminded of what fleshing out knowledge in truth looks like...wisdom.

Blessings ~
